New Orleans cemetaries are mostly above ground because much of the city is at or below sea level -- caskets can have a tendancy to pop out of the ground. These tombs at the cemetary by City Park are a common site.

I heard a few years ago about how NewO had above ground cemeteries and I wondered how they fared during the floods.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting - more like tombs than grave plots.
ReplyDeleteSydney Daily Photo
surprenant cette architecture identique pour toutes ces tombes. intéressant
ReplyDeletesurprising this identical architecture for all these tombs. interesting
Been to N.O 3 times, and never had time to visit the cemeteries ... thanks for the pic!
ReplyDeleteI, too, wondered how Katrina affected the cemeteries in NO. Wa there much damage?
ReplyDeleteInteresting photo.
ReplyDeleteThese tombs are so different from the ones I saw in Lafayette cemetery. A very special place... Was it damaged by the storm?
ReplyDeleteThat's why I can't be burried in NO - I can't swim ;-)
ReplyDeleteThese look uniform plus neat and tidy!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shot!

Beautiful photo Steve.
ReplyDeletePlanet Earth Daily Photo.
I keep meaning to take photos of our old family tombs in St. Louis #1 and #2, but of course one doesn't just wander around in there without appropriate security. In St. Louis #2 we have the old Legeai tomb with its incription in French, and next door to it the McDonnel tomb which is identical, that was built for the in-laws!
ReplyDeleteOne of our more unusual cemeteries!
ReplyDeletei was waiting for this post, Steve!! :)
ReplyDeleteI was looking forward to your post. I've always wanted to check out the cemeteries of N.O.

For some reason I expected to see something less symmetrical in NO. Even still, it is a nice surprise.
ReplyDeleteWhen we loved there I made a point to visit these cities of the dead, both in a tourist group and on my own. They truly are a part of the mystique of NOLA.
ReplyDeleteBut I did not visit this one. This is very different, and as many have pointed out, so much more uniform than most.
My favorite tour I did in New Orleans was the Cemetery Tour....My first experience with above ground graves..I love your picture....if you can like cemeteries...I like these!!
ReplyDeleteFine photo for theme day. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot! I was (embarrassingly enough) just watching Dracula 2000, and they had a shot in a cemetery just like this--hopefully you had better inspiration than that. lol!
ReplyDeleteVery striking!
interesting, I never even considered this, but it make clear sense. Living 1300 feet above sea level, it's sometimes hard to relate to the different way things have to be done.
ReplyDeleteYour city is the only one where I have visited its cemetries. And I must say that as weird as it may sound, it was a nice experience.
ReplyDeleteA great photo. question...is creamation common in New Orleans?
ReplyDeleteI have always found the New Orleans tombs quite fascinating. They have so much character. Good theme shot.
ReplyDeleteand thats one of the perfectly aligned tomb and its very neat. nice shot.
ReplyDeleteFor all who asked -- from what I could see, the cemeteries didn't have anywhere near the destruction that many homes had

I really like how you took this photo. Nice one.
