Theme day -- New Orleans street art

Today is theme day on the City Daily Photo blogs. The Theme is grafitti/street art. More than 144 different blogs are participating.

Above is a unique "street art" in New Orleans that is rapidly disappearing as street signs are replaced. Katrina blew thousands of street signs away making it hard to find your way around. So residents started taking it upon themselves to get guide signs up. Some of the signs were just painted on cardboard. Others were more creative and more colorful. This is a good example.

Hi Steve, it's quite creative and a nice solution to counter the effects of Katrina. I've been thinking of getting back to New Orleans, but always a bit concerned to have a big disappointment...
The last two houses you posted are beautiful, and the picture of your grandson looks great!
Have a great weekend!

I had to read your comment to fully appreciate how historically significant these signs are. Quite emotional in fact... Glad you took a photo before they all disappear.

nice photo and selection for the theme day... it is quite sobering to realize their importance in history, especially when we realize how long it's been now since the horrible tragedy....

Those are actually quite colorful, and at the same time a bit bittersweet. I'm glad that you have recorded this for posterity (Dauphine is one of my favorite streets).

This is awesome. I couldn't imagine getting around without street names. Long ago, everything was "down the road a piece"!

Great photo of a good solution to a real problem. I remember a wonderful mural on of a jazz group on the side of a building in NO. My sense is that it was in the area near Notre Dame and St. Peters close to the river.

Its a shame they don't keep some of them instead of replacing them with the city signs

Very interesting, Steve. I never even thought about the fact that street signs disappeared with Katrina. . . .

These are just great. Fabulous choice, Steve. Love the colours used. Very moving photo. Now this really is 'street' art.

Excellent and practical as well.
I wish all those street signs are some sort of artistic feel like this.

love it when a community rises beyond its immediate needs to beautify its surroundings or to make it unique!!!
