Hurricane Gustav: Weather to go home?

The guys with the big bills were back yesterday as the offshore winds started subsiding a little bit. Still strong, the winds were apparently down to a pace that the pelicans didn't feel as threatened. They were enjoying soaring on the winds over the beach. Several of the pelicans were sitting on the poles in the bay behind us on Perdido Key, so I wander over for a few shots.

The clouds are still rolling across the beach and off to northwest to feed a dying Gustav. We are listening and watching the news trying to find out if it is safe to venture back to New Orleans and what the traffic will be like. Cells phones are hard to communicate by -- "All circuits are full at this time." Everybody must be checking in.

I just knew you would sniff out some wildlife while in Perdido. This is a great one. I wish you could be in Perdido when the weather is fine. It's a great little spot of beach. Seagrove is our favorite, but the beaches all along the coast there are gorgeous when you don't have a hurricane breathing down your neck.

Glad you made it through this one, Steve. Now I suppose the Hannah one or whatever it is named will be the next one to watch out for.

Glad you are safe and sound, Steve. I've heard that the other parishs started re-populating this morning, and Orleans Parish will reopen at 12:01am tomorrow morning. Mayor Nagin said the decision was made that way in order to try to relieve the traffic jam... but suggested if you could stay away for an extra day that would be even better. Still a large number without power. good luck on the journey home. Be safe!

Ah I see it didn't take you long to get back to your beloved birds. And what a bird photo. Just fabulous. Hope you get home soon, Steve.

Beautiful pelican!! Here's hoping you can head home soon. We are hearing on the news that there is still no electricity in the city.

This pelican looks as if he is happy the hurricane is over too.

What a beauty! Great photo!

Here in Mississippi, they are still telling evacuees to hold off on returning home until Thursday or Friday. Traffic on southbound roads has been heavier than normal, but not too bad so far. I'm glad you made it to safety and hope you are enjoying the time with your family.

I love to watch the pelicans fly in flocks at Gulf Shores, Alabama. They effortlessly skim the wave tops, in unison no less. This is a splendid photo, Steve.

My aunt's niece (on my uncle's side) returned home to Slidell today to find no damage and the electricity still on. A far cry from how they fared with Katrina. She took all sorts of backroad/highways and managed to avoid the traffic snarls.

I pray for good news when you get to go home.
