A digression from New Orleans for today --Ever had a place you couldn't get out of your mind? We took a cruise from New Orleans down to the Yucatan Peninsula about a year ago. It is weighing heavy on me this morning because this little village in Costa Maya took a direct hit from Hurricane Dean yesterday. Sure, it has weathered storms before, but, a Category 5 storm coming at you at 20 miles an hour is sure going to change the landscape.
You can see the structures are not very substantial. (I like to call the photo above "Beachfront condo" but I think this is a motel)-- easy to rebuild. Nonetheless, this kind of storm gives you little to rebuild from.I tell everyone that there is a chair down there a few feet out in the water with my name on it. Not so sure about that any more.
I guess that's why you have photos... the dream lives on

Man, that house doesn't look like it could sustain much. BTW- why didn't you take me on that cruise?

Gorgeous Mexico... Hurricanes seem to always be hitting the most fragile regions. Your photos are so beautiful. The color of that water is a dream.

Beautiful laid back town. I could see why people vacation there but my goodness I don't think there will be much left after Dean roars through.
how much chance do you have against a category 5 storm!!!.
i can understand why it's weighing so heavy on you...before tsunami hit southern coastal parts of India, i was a tourist there and loved the places....after tsunami, all i could see was signs of destruction..it was heart-breaking.

I hate to say but the top photo is a common sight around here and we indulge in this habit now and again!!!! Such fun if you can keep the water out of your wine!!!

What a great place. I wouldn't mind a weekend at the beach condo. I hope this little place remains intact.
I've never seen someone put the table and chairs in the water to sit down. I guess this would keep you cooler with your feet in there.
Oh i feel sad. That watery dining setting looks fabulous and, when they are back up and running as i'm sure they will be, one of those chairs also has my name on it. Please. Best wishes.
We were in Costa Maya last year around this time, too. I had the same thoughts yesterday. I have heard that Majahual is basically gone, and that the hurricane destroyed most of the pier.
