End Up -- Theme Day

Today is the first-of-the-month "Theme Day" on many City Daily Photo Blogs. Today 's theme is metal. And there is one piece of metal that has all of New Orleans talking. It's this barge that was struck by a ship. It sunk and spilled a lot of oil. That caused the river to be shut down -- dozens of ships were held up for days -- some in port, some waiting to come into port. Then just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, workers started to get the barge ready to lift it out. But it started leaking again.

Here the salvage crews works out plans to get the barge up and keep the oil spill to a minimum.

Down stream, dozens of boats pushed booms around to soak up the oil. This was a massive cleanup effort.

Steve, your photo certainly fits the theme of "metal". My goodness what a mess this has made. What gets me is the report I read that the operator didn't even have the proper licenses. Now what sort of fine will he get? Makes me shudder wondering how many others like him are operating tugboats and ships without the required licenses and what future disasters await. Super post. Very much metal but telling us what's been going on too. So sad when oil spills. I hope they get it right way up without more spills. I'd have thought New Orleans had had enough of problems.

Nice photo.

Really nice choice for the theme day! This is horrible, this mess. I agree with Jon, and wonder what is next on the horizon sometimes.

Perfect for theme day! You got a great shot.

Oh yes, I'm sure no one in the US has not heard this story. It's on the news quite a bit.

I think it's an excellent choice for the theme day. Thanks for sharing your first hand account!

Excellent photo and timely, too! Well done. Here's hoping this accident is cleaned up quickly.

Happy Theme Day!

Excellent choice for theme day. It's metal and it's all over the news. We've had enough of these so called "accidents".

Wow, Steve. Thanks for this shot. What a terrible mess! How are clean-up efforts coming along? How many bird species are affected, do you know?

This is a really interesting choice for today's theme. Thanks for bringing it to us.

Hi Steve! TGIF and I’m trying to make a break from some hectic weeks to surf the blogosphere and enjoy your excellent blog…
Well I forgot it was first of August and that you were busy with theme day; furthermore with all mess in the river. But let me tell that I loved the swanns: white and black. Just bought Nassim Nicholas Taleb's book... ;)
Many thanks for your comments on Blogtrotter, still at the MoMA! Hope you enjoy and wish you a great weekend and a nice holiday, in case you have the chance to profit from it! ;))

It's always so unfortunate when there is an oil spill. Great choice for theme day.

Oh, dear. I get spooked by the exposed undersides of boats, since it usually signals something is dreadfully wrong, as in this case. What a mess.

Accident apart, great 'Metal' shot!

I read about this in the newspapers and online and wonder how they got the spilled oil out of the river or did they (I hope not) just let it drift out to sea?

Chris said...

Great shot and choice for theme day, Steve. I just hate oil spills, as do most people, and I hope the one responsible will pay for it.

What a sad sight to see only metal where there used to be a barge. :(
